Obsidian

The first glass came in existence in the desert millions of years ago. Extreme heat melted the sand into a thick mass. Also through vitrification of lava a type of glass came into being now known as obsidian.

Man discovered glass around 5000 BC. Around 100 years after BC people started to make clear glass. In Syrië they discovered that you could blow glass through a hollow pipe. A technique was developed to produce higher quantities. In these days Syrië was a part of the Roman empire and therefore the blowing of glass was introduced in Europe. Glass was a luxury article that was used in churches and palaces. It was not until hundreds of years later that is became common to make window glass for the upper class.
